Not a prediction, a mirror: what a monthly fortune is actually for

People often ask us if Luna Post is just a horoscope in the mail. It's a fair question, and the answer explains most of why we started it.

We don't try to tell you what will happen. Nobody knows that, and we'd be wary of anyone who says they do. What comes in your mailbox each full moon is a short note, written from your birthday and a tarot card drawn for you that month. Its job is to help you slow down for a few minutes and look at your own life with fresh eyes. We think of it as a mirror more than a prediction.

Why a prompt does more than a forecast

A forecast asks you to believe something. A prompt asks you to think about something, and maybe do something, which tends to be more useful. You can read a forecast and forget it. A good prompt keeps you company for a while.

Say the card on your postcard is about finishing what you started. That isn't a prediction. It's an idea you can hold up to your own week, to see where it fits and where it doesn't. The noticing is yours, and that's where the good part is.

You may know this from journaling. "Write about your week" can leave you staring at a blank page. "What did you say yes to this month that you wish you'd said no to?" can fill a page and a half. A helpful prompt points you somewhere specific and then lets you fill in the rest.

The honest part about astrology

People tend to feel that general descriptions of personality fit them closely. Psychologists call this the Barnum effect, and we think anyone writing about astrology should mention it. A line like you have a private side most people don't get to see feels true to almost everyone, because it is true of almost everyone.

Knowing that doesn't spoil anything. It just shows you where the value lives. If a general line makes you think of one friend you've been meaning to call, nothing was predicted, and you still remembered someone who matters to you. The note gave you a reason to look, and what you found was already yours.

What we can do is make the note more personal than a column written for twelve signs. Your fortune draws on your star sign, your Chinese zodiac, your numerology and a tarot card drawn for you, so two people rarely get the same one. It still isn't a prediction. It's a clearer mirror than "Leos are confident."

How to read one when it arrives

Try not to worry about whether it's "right." That question tends to go nowhere. These three usually help more:

• What did this remind me of first? Notice whatever came to mind before you talked yourself out of it. That first thought is often the one worth following.
• Where is this already true? Look at this week, in something you've done or have been putting off, rather than someday.
• What's one thing I could do? Every Luna Post fortune suggests something small you can act on. Try it, even imperfectly, and let that be enough for the month.

Why once a month, and why on paper

A daily horoscope moves on before you've had time to try anything. A month gives life room to happen in between, so you can see how an idea holds up. The full moon keeps the schedule for you, too. It shows up on time whether or not anyone remembers.

Paper helps in its own way. A phone notification gets lost among all the others. A postcard has to be picked up, read and put somewhere.
