Your star sign, your Chinese zodiac, and your Life Path number: how the three fit together

Every Luna Post fortune starts from one piece of information: your birthday. From that single date, three completely separate traditions will tell you three different things about yourself. They were built centuries and continents apart, they don't agree, and reading them together is more interesting than reading any one of them alone.

Your Western star sign: the month you were born into

The sun sign most people know comes from the tropical zodiac, which divides the year by the sun's apparent position along the ecliptic. The cutoffs shift by a day or so depending on the year, which is why people born on the edge of a sign are told they're "on the cusp" — you aren't half of each, you're whichever one the sun was actually in at the moment you were born.

What the sun sign describes, in the way astrologers use it, is disposition: your default setting, the way you come at things before you think about it. Aries first through the door; Taurus in no hurry; Virgo quietly rearranging the shelf while everyone talks.

Your Chinese zodiac: the year, and a caveat about January

The Chinese zodiac runs on a twelve-year animal cycle — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — crossed with the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), which is what produces the full sixty-year cycle. 2026, for instance, is a Fire Horse year.

The caveat that trips up half the internet: the Chinese year doesn't start on January 1. It starts at Lunar New Year, which falls somewhere between late January and mid-February. If you were born in that window, the animal most sites give you may be wrong by one — a January 20 baby can belong to the previous year's animal entirely. Where the sun sign is about disposition, the animal year is usually read as temperament in company: how you deal with other people, luck, timing, and risk.

Your Life Path number: the arithmetic one

Numerology's Life Path is the most transparent of the three, because you can check the math yourself. Reduce the month, the day, and the year each to a single digit, then add those three together and reduce again.

Take March 14, 1997:

• Month: 3
• Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
• Year: 1997 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 7 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8
• Total: 3 + 5 + 8 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7

Life Path 7: reflection and inner growth. The one exception to the reducing is the master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which are left standing rather than collapsed to 2, 4, and 6.

Numerology has more to say than the Life Path alone. Your Expression number comes from the letters of your full name, your Soul Urge from its vowels, your Personality from its consonants, and your Birth Day number is simply the day of the month you were born on. What to do when they disagree

They will. You'll get a steady, build-for-the-long-haul Capricorn sun with a 5 Life Path that's all change and freedom, and the two will read like different people.

That contradiction is the most useful thing on the card. You already contain it — most people do — and seeing it written down as two traditions pulling in opposite directions is a faster route to oh, that's exactly the fight I'm having about my job than any single tidy label would be. Don't pick a winner. Ask which one has been driving lately, and whether that's working.
