Your star sign, your Chinese zodiac, and your Life Path number: how the three fit together

Every Luna Post fortune starts with your birthday. From that one date, three different traditions each have something to say about you. They come from different times and places, they don't always agree, and reading them side by side is more interesting than reading any one alone.

Your Western star sign: the month you arrived in

The sun sign most of us know is based on where the sun appeared in the sky, against the background of stars, on the day you were born. The dates where one sign ends and the next begins can move by a day depending on the year, which is why people born near the edge are told they're "on the cusp." You aren't half of each, though. You're the sign the sun was in when you were born.

Astrologers usually read your sun sign as your natural style, the way you tend to meet things before you've stopped to think. An Aries is often first through the door, a Taurus likes to take their time, and a Virgo may be quietly tidying up while everyone else is still talking.

Your Chinese zodiac, and a note about January

The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve-year cycle of animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each year also has one of five elements, and together they make a sixty-year cycle. 2026, for example, is a Fire Horse year.

This part surprises a lot of people: the Chinese year doesn't start on January 1. It starts at Lunar New Year, which falls somewhere between late January and mid-February. If your birthday is in that window, the animal many websites give you could be wrong. Someone born on January 20 may belong to the year before. We use the real Lunar New Year date for your birth year, so your animal is right even when the paper placemat at a restaurant isn't.

Your sun sign is usually read as your natural style. Your animal year is more often read as how you are with other people, and how you handle luck, timing and risk.

Your Life Path number, which you can check yourself

The Life Path number is the easiest of the three to follow, because you can do the math yourself. Add up the digits of the month, the day and the year separately until each is a single digit. Then add those three together and reduce once more.

Here's March 14, 1997:

• Month: 3
• Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
• Year: 1997 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 7 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8
• Then 3 + 5 + 8 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7

That's a Life Path 7, the number of reflection and inner growth. There's one exception to the adding: the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept as they are instead of being reduced to 2, 4 and 6.

Numerology has more than the Life Path. Your Expression number comes from all the letters in your full name, your Soul Urge from the vowels, your Personality from the consonants, and your Birth Day number is just the day of the month you were born. What to do when they disagree

Sooner or later they will. You might have a Capricorn sun, steady and patient, next to a Life Path 5 that loves change and freedom, and the two can sound like different people.

That kind of mix is often the most helpful thing on the card. Most of us carry two sides like that, and seeing them written out can help you notice oh, that's the push and pull I've been feeling about work sooner than one neat label would. You don't have to choose a side. A kinder question is which one has been leading lately, and whether that's been working for you.
