The Nine of Swords card from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck

Swords

Nine of Swords

anxiety · 3am · dread out of proportion

Upright

Sitting up in bed with your head in your hands. The Nine is the night fear: the worry that is enormous in the dark and merely a task in the morning. What it points at is usually real. Its size, at 3am, is not.

Reversed

Reversed, the worst of it is lifting — or the anxiety is being kept so private that nobody has been given a chance to help with it.

If this is your card this month

What keeps you up, and how big is it actually in daylight?

A card is a prompt rather than a forecast. It doesn't know what will happen, and the useful part is what you do with the question it hands you. We make that case at more length in not a prediction, a mirror.

Where this card came from

If Nine of Swords arrived on a postcard, it was drawn for you for that full moon, and the reflection on the back was written from what it means. And if it didn't, well — that's the other thing we do here: a card and a reflection in your mailbox every full moon.
