The Temperance card from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck

The Major Arcana

Temperance

balance · blending · moderation

Upright

Two things that look opposed can often be mixed, slowly, into something better than either. Temperance is patience as a technique: small adjustments, the long middle path, the recipe that only works at the right temperature.

Reversed

Reversed, you tend to get extremes — all in or all out, feast or nothing, the correction that overshoots the problem it was solving. This is the card of the fix that becomes its own issue.

If this is your card this month

Where would a smaller, steadier version of this work better?

A card is a prompt rather than a forecast. It doesn't know what will happen, and the useful part is what you do with the question it hands you. We make that case at more length in not a prediction, a mirror.

Where this card came from

If Temperance arrived on a postcard, it was drawn for you for that full moon, and the reflection on the back was written from what it means. And if it didn't, well — that's the other thing we do here: a card and a reflection in your mailbox every full moon.
